FUNDING SUPPORTS KOOTENAY TOURISM PROJECTS

December 3, 2008

Tourism projects in the Kootenays are being supported by almost $54,000 in grants through the UBCM Community Tourism Program, announced Tourism, Culture and the Arts Minister Bill Bennett today.

“Tourism is one of B.C.’s largest and most sustainable industries,” said Bennett. “These latest projects in Radium, Fernie and Elkford will be instrumental in attracting more visitors to our communities and will play a key role in helping the Province reach its goal of doubling tourism revenues by 2015.”

The grants were provided as part of the second phase of funding from the $25-million Community Tourism Program, which is administered by the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) on behalf of the Province. The program supports local priorities to increase tourism activity and build stronger economies.

“Economic diversification is vital for B.C. communities,” said UBCM president Robert Hobson. “UBCM is pleased to see these new investments for tourism marketing, infrastructure and events in the Kootenays.”

With the funding, the City of Fernie will get $21,196 for website enhancements, the Old Coach Trail Greenway Connector Project in Radium will receive $15,513 and the District of Elkford will receive $16,840 to upgrade signage throughout the community.

The UBCM Community Tourism Program was announced by Premier Gordon Campbell at the 2004 UBCM convention. A total of $12.5 million in grants are awarded during each phase of the Community Tourism Fund.
